The Sabres completed a five race Vic Titles last week end with somewhat mixed results.

Greg Heins performed above expectations whilst Colin White after have three reasonable placings with some bad luck in race 3, injured his knee and missed the last two races.

Trevor Naismith being under 60 kgms battled very well in the heavy conditions on the first day and finished all races he sailed in.

Drew Henry only sailed the first three races (improving in each race) on the Saturday but had to miss Sunday due to home duties.

Peter White had a poor series with a DNQ (11) and a DNF

Results were:

Greg Heins (35) 21 32 35 24 =112 28th

Peter White 20 (DSQ 11) 25 16 DNF =113 29th

Colin White 19 12 21 DNS DNS =119 30th

Trev. Naismith 51 42 DNS 42 42 =177 46th

Drew Henry 44 41 37 DNS DNS =189 52nd

Someone may have thought the boys were only club racing with a 28th, 29th & 30th in a 66 boat fleet.

Racing will be back to normal today with a Coffee cruise in the morning – see above article.

Normal racing for the Championship/Perpetual series commences at 2:00pm.

As advised last week, weather permitting, a number of sabres Greg, Colin, Trev and Peter will sail around the Laser weather mark the first time only. All other boats to sail the normal Sabre course. This keeps the interest for all skippers, allows all competitors to have a go at being at the front of the fleet and it’s always good to have a bit of a change from time to time, so please make sure as many boats as possible attend. This will occur in Race 2 – the Perpetual Series race.

Vale Aileen Tregear

It is very sad to hear of the passing of Aileen on Sunday 12th February after a battle with cancer. Aileen was a stalwart in her time at the club with positions on the Social House and Executive committees (five years as Secretary during the 1980’s) that she occupied with distinction. Aileen was a very personable type who would always welcome visitors with open arms and a friendly smile. This made her invaluable on the social side of the club where she helped bind club members together. Her efforts were also directed toward new members. A wonderful lady who will be sadly missed by all those who knew her.

Our thoughts are with Darrell and is family during this sad time.

Coffee Cruise

The Coffee cruise for ALL CLASSES interested in a leisurely sail takes off/took off this morning (weather permitting) and a good fleet is anticipated. All those wishing to participate must be on the water by 10:00am. The destination is the Life Saving Club just before Chelsea Y.C. which has a Café underneath the main rooms.

It’s a lot of fun; it’s relaxing and something different. We may have a patrol boat with us for the journey depending on the conditions.

History

This International 12 Metre Sharpie was built alongside the Maribynong River in 1948 for Mr Bert Grice; well known patron and ex-Commodore of the Frankston Yatch Club.

She was named “UB 2″ after the blood livestock brand. She was skippered by the late Alby Merman RAN, OBE and sailing master; the late Jim White. She raced at Frankston until 1956-57, when Jim White bought her and UB 2 joined the growing fleet of sharpies at Mordialloc 12 sq. Metre Sailing Club on the island at Mordialloc Creek.

She raced against some of Australia’s finest sailors; namely Sire James Hardy, Rolly Tasker and John Cuneo.

In 1960 Clive Hearne of Mordialloc bought her for 130 pounds and renamed her Selina II after his mother.

Race Record

Mordialloc was still a one class club with an average of 12-15 Sharpies racing every Saturday.

Between 1960 and 1964 Selina II won the Club Championship/Aggregiate double four times andding to Jim White’s four doubles of the previous 4 years, making 8 consecutive years, a record still to this day.

In 1964, the last Australian Championship for 12sq. Metre Sharpies was won by Selina II capped off by winning the Tomlinson Memorial Trophy for 12sq. Metres.

After winning the 1964 Victorian title the Mordialloc fleet was disbanded to make way for the faster and cheaper Australian modified, plywood hull Lightweight Sharpie.

Selina II was sold for $180 and was raced at Wagga Wagga Yacht Club along with other ex-Mordialloc Sharpies – Ovaltiny, Sabre and Impala.

Restoration

Allan Rock, Commodore of Mordialloc Sailing Club 1980-81 suggested the club should have a representative model of the class the Club was founded on. Bill Templeton, a foundation member of the Club offered to pay the purchase price for a suitable ex-Mordialloc Sharpie.

Selina had sat in a hay shed in Wagga for four years and was fortunately in a sound condition needing a redecking and general overhaul of her original cotton sails. She was purchased in 1981 for $400 and towed back to Melbourne by Allan Rock and Ken Venn. Work commenced immediately by Malcombe Bennet and a band of dedicated sailors, who restored Selina to the condition that you see her today.

Thanks to the generous donations of the Club’s “Old Timers”, Selina was relaunched on opening Day 1981 by bill Templeton, MLA.

Today

Selina is on the National Register of Vintage and Veteran Yachts in N.S.W. and is the last remaining active 12sq. Metre Sharpie on a Victorian Yacht Club register.

With the participation of seventeen sabres on the Saturday before last (4th February), a new record has been established for the Sabre fleet at the club.

Thirteen boats actually raced in the afternoon whilst four boats, like Dave Moate ahead of a keel boat race in the afternoon at Williamstown, Tony Gorbaty and Father Jeremy and son Josh all went for a cruise in the morning and had the best breeze of the day. Ryan Bargholz participated in the Adult training with support from Father Peter.

Peter and Ryan Bargholz are new members to the club this season and we wish them a most enjoyable season getting to know the club.

Jeremy and son Josh were visitors for the day and we hope they enjoyed their sail. They are most welcome to visit Mordialloc at any time and would hope that they may join the club at some stage in the near future.

At least three boats will be at Sandringhamover the weekend for the State titles – good luck to Greg, Colin and Peter.

As a reminder to all sailors, the Commodore’s / Vice Commodore’s trophy is, for this year, being overlaid on races held the first week of each month (one exception) with the Championship/Perpetual series. The results up to race 4 can be found at the end of this newsletter.

Last weeks first race has counted as points towards Race 4 of the Commodore’s / Vice Commodore’s trophy. Race 5 is set down for 3rd March with the final Race 6 being set for the last race of the season on 28th April.

A great turn out of Junior and Adult training members saw a good fleet take to the water in very light conditions but this did not detract from the enjoyment gained especially from the Optie sailors.

The following submission has been requested to be published in the newsletter to bring members attention to the issue of “borrowing” minor fittings from boats stored in the yard that do not appear to be sailing, without them being returning.

There is no excuse to “borrow” without permission and I feel sure that if people asked their fellow class sailors for a spare shackle or block, they would be only too happy to oblige.

“I know my boat is old and maybe it LOOKs like it never gets sailed but on the weekend (and I do Sail most weekends) I discovered a missing Shackle.

This was a key part of holding the mast up!!!

If people are going to take stuff off other peoples boats can they PLEASE put the stuff back where you found it!

I will be checking the web cam security footage to see if I can spot the culprit.

From old wooden Sabre with Grey plastic cover.”

Many thanks for highlighting the issue.

The first thoughts on the Gate issue from some people might be “shudder shudder” someone is trying to put a spanner in the works and go against what the Executive committee has been elected to do – make decisions.

This action can in fact be a good thing as it shows that the club is alive and well with thoughts and ideas from many points of view coming together to determine what is the best course of action for the club to take.

Harmonious discussions with all points of view presented in a constructive and open manner is paramount for any club if it wants to survive on a long term basis.

So instead of standing back and hoping it will pass quickly, be proactive and get involved in the discussions for the sake of a better club.

The following questions and concerns were sent in by members in response to my article in last weeks Around Mordi with regard to the automation of our lane gate. Please note that many of the responses provided below reflect my own personal views on this matter and are not necessarily shared with the other members of the executive committee.

Brett Wilson

Question

Response

Could you please advise the price range of the quotes obtained so far and how much the MSC will need to contribute? Also if there is a quote for connecting it up to the MSC club building, what is that?

Quotes for Gate and Automation:

ARCO $17,000K

Domestic Grade $8,000K

Automatic Openings $13,000

Automatic Openings was preferred.

Final quote $10,700 (donation of new gate and laptop)

Power $1,000 K

Less Grant $3,000

Less proceeds of fob sales over 3 years

MSC estimated outlay $7,400

Future power and data connection to club house $5,000

How about better education of members combined with improvements to signage to resolve the security concerns?

Better education would help to ensure the gate is kept locked by our members. The posting of signs would probably only have a marginal effect on behaviour – consider how prone people are to not reading signs or simply ignoring or become complacent. Another thing to consider is whether the requisite ‘attention grabbing’ signage will be viewed by some as an eyesore.

Will the gate be reliable enough – in particular considering the salty environment?

The main drive is installed underground in sealed unit rated @ IP68 (No ingress of dust; complete protection against contact; suitable for continuous immersion in water to 1M)

Currently it is possible to leave the gate closed with the padlock hanging through the gate so it appears locked. We can then inform guests (such as prospective members, sail trainees etc) of this and ask them to lock it behind them. Is there a way I could do something similar with the new gate proposal so I do not have to meet them at the gate?

A hold-open key will allow the gate to be left open. Member who requires a hold-open key for specific purposes will be entitled to one. In the case where hold-open allows unauthorised entry – at least with the automated system they will be able to get out.Hold-open keys will need to be used with a certain amount of discretion.

Will the expenditure on the gate in any way impact the delivery of the following capital items:
• new carpet for the club rooms
• renovate the long room to become a training facility
• upgrade to BBQ and area

The expense itself will not impact the delivery of these items. The club is in the process of drafting ideas and plans to ensure the future of the club. Until these plans have been adequately developed in consultation with members, some projects will be put on hold. This is to avoid jeopardising plans by spending money on items which in turn become redundant. In the meantime we have purchased a new stainless BBQ and await delivery.Note the renovation of the long room is going ahead because it is unlikely that it will be affected by these plans.

Will the expenditure on the gate in any way impact the delivery of the following maintenance items:
• adequately service the rescue boats
• replace jockey wheels on Mordy Duck and the Tinny
• repair / replace / extend the rubber fenders on the wharf and under the crane
• make repairs to the sliding garage door and/or automate

The cost of the gate does not impact on the delivery of any of these items.

With an automated gate how would the Moridalloc Motor Yacht Club (MMYC) Mooring users gain access? Would MSC still need to issue key passes and update the automated mechanism?

MMYC members would need to take out Social Membership of MSC and have a fob issued to them. For occasions where they want the gate left open for an extended period, we would issue a nominated representative with a hold-open key. The nominated representative would be responsible for re-enabling the gate.

Assuming the City of Kingston (Council) would like the MSC Gate to be automated so that vehicles could exit without an access/key pass so that those unauthorised vehicles that do get in would not go and break the locks on the Council Gate so that they can exit. What is stopping them from setting this up on the Council Gate?

There is no technical reason. The problem we face is that the only reason anybody (other than council) has car access to the foreshore is to service the boating community and in particular members and guests of MSC and MMYC. Hence they see it as our responsibility to provide a solution and not theirs.

If a vehicle can exit without an access/key pass they can effectively open the gate from the inside. So what then stops another vehicle from entering when the gate is opened by this method?

The gate will automatically close behind the exiting vehicle. Anyone trying to rush the gate to get in would risk the gate closing on their vehicle.

How do we program the gate to remain open or activate and deactivate the keys if we can’t access our neighbours property.

The gate will be programmable from within the lane. The gate has a battery backup and can be locked open or closed if the mains power fails and the battery is dead.

It is mainly some members of the committee who come down during the week and some sailors that come to the club on non-sailing days that hop in and out of their cars. Are we really that lazy that we have to spend a fortune of members money for the sake of a few?

Many of members volunteer huge amounts of time and make massive personal sacrifices for the sake of our club. This frequently takes them away from work, businesses and family. To suggest that these members are lazy is a very big call.In addition to other benefits, automation of the gate increases their convenience and safety. It also helps in the case of disability.Convenience– after hours entry to the club currently requires getting in and out of the car no less than 4 times purely to securely deal with the gate (when there is only one person).Safety – member safety is often put at risk by having to deal with members of the public who may be locked in. The risk of serious confrontation is real.

Disability – people who have difficulty getting in and out of vehicles due to permanent disability or other conditions will benefit.

If anyone is locked in how do they get out?

Drive up the laneway and the gate will open automatically. Alternatively use the fob reader.

If the gate is automatic opening for the inside without the necessity of a key, does this mean that boats left overnight at regattas can be taken up the laneway and the gate will open thus allowing boats to be stolen.

Only if it’s a steel hull or the boat is attached to a vehicle. The sensitivity of the ground-loop detector will be adjusted so that boat trolleys will not activate it.

If the gate is to be kept locked, what happens with functions, people who want to visit us to sail who are not members, family members who do not have keys?

During functions the gate will be left in the hold open position. In the case of visitors to the club, the gate will need to be opened by a member just as expected with the current system. In the case of family members, multiple entry passes can be obtained.

If the gate is to be left open on sailing days, the public can bring their cars down (as they do now). Will we have a time that the gate will be locked on sailing days?

The gate will be locked open on sailing days and will be enabled when the Duty Exec member leaves. This is no different to our current proceduresAny members still at the club after the Duty Exec member leaves will still be able to exit.
