2012 Mordialloc Wooden Boat Festival

The Mordialloc Sailing club will be hosting the 2nd Mordialloc Wooden Boat Festival on Sunday 15th April 2011. Accordingly, we again extend a warm invitation for you to join us for this popular Port Phillip event.

Mordialloc has a fantastic history of wooden boats, one only has to look up and down the creek at the south end of the village to see that. The wooden boat builders, Pompei’s, has been an established part of Mordialloc since early last century.

While wooden boats have their roots firmly buried in the past they are still used, built and enjoyed by many. In fact with the shrinking of borders through the internet we are seeing a revival in wooden boats as it is now easier to connect with others interested in similar things.

This festival is about celebrating that tradition of wooden boats, old and new, and establishing new links between wooden boat owners, builders, suppliers and enthusiasts.

The Festival welcomes wooden boats of all shapes and sizes, but it is limited by the facilities we can offer. If you want to take your tall ship for a sail and join in our parade you will be most welcome, however you may need to anchor offshore and bring your ship’s boat to shore. From Tall Ships to model boats, boats driven by steam, by sail, by oar and by engine are welcome to take their place ashore or afloat.

Cafe and bar facilities will be available throughout the day with a BBQ lunch planned.

There is an entry fee of $15 per boat owner for on the water activities. (Multiple entries by one owner will only incur the one $15 charge.) Static displays and public attendance is free.

Online registrations will open on the 27th of February 2012.

Launching Facilities

This prime location provides excellent launching facilities for trailable yachts into Mordialloc Creek using the Club’s crane.  There is limited mooring along the entrance to the creek on the south side.

There is a large grass rigging area in front of the club with a concrete ramp leading from the rigging area providing direct beach access. The presense of the rock wall adjacent to the creek provides partial shelter for the launching of boats. No vehicular access is allowed on the beach but it is possible to launch from road trailers as long as the surf is not running to high.

Alternative Launching

There is a boat launching ramp suitable for power boats situated further up Mordialloc Creek, off Park Road. This provide car and boat trailer parking but access to the bay is restricted by road and rail bridges crossing the creek. Sailing boats would need to be able to step their masts once clearing the road bridge.

Facilities

The clubrooms have a Cafe and Bar with indoor seating and dinning areas and an outdoor sundeck. Changing rooms with showers are available. Secure storage of valuables is available at the cafe.

Public Attendance

The public are welcome to attend the festival. Throughout the day there will be static displays at the club as well as boats attending the festival before and after sailing. The parade of boats (scheduled at 2pm) will be best veiwed from the Mordialloc Pier. Access to the pier is from the Mordialloc Village on the north side of the creek.

Limited public parking will be available on site, however there is ample public parking within a short walk of the club in the Mordialloc village as well as south of the Mordialloc Creek. Pedestrian access is via the public walkway off Bowman Street just south of the vehicular access to the club.

Access via Public Transport

Mordialloc is serviced by suburban trains and buses. You can use the Metlink site to plan your trip.
